Aadhaar and UIDAI: Overview and Latest Updates
Aadhaar is India’s national digital identity system, managed by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Through Aadhaar, every resident gets a 12-digit unique number. This single number helps people prove identity and address and is widely used for banking, mobile SIM, government schemes, and many online services.
In simple words: Aadhaar connects one person to one identity.
What Is Aadhaar?
Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number issued to residents of India. It combines:
- Personal details (name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile, email)
- Biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan, photo)
This combination creates a secure and duplicate-free identity.
Aadhaar is:
- Voluntary
- Free of cost
- Available to Indian citizens, NRIs, and even foreign nationals who have lived in India for 182 days or more in last 12 months
Core Features of Aadhaar

- e-Aadhaar: Digital PDF copy of Aadhaar. It is legally valid. Password = first 4 letters of your name (CAPITAL) + birth year Example: Vish1996
