Aadhaar and UIDAI: Overview and Latest Updates

Aadhaar is India’s national digital identity system, managed by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) under Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Through Aadhaar, every resident gets a 12-digit unique number. This single number helps people prove identity and address and is widely used for banking, mobile SIM, government schemes, and many online services.

In simple words: Aadhaar connects one person to one identity.

What Is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number issued to residents of India. It combines:

  • Personal details (name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile, email)
  • Biometric data (fingerprints, iris scan, photo)

This combination creates a secure and duplicate-free identity.

Aadhaar is:

  • Voluntary
  • Free of cost
  • Available to Indian citizens, NRIs, and even foreign nationals who have lived in India for 182 days or more in last 12 months

Core Features of Aadhaar

  • Unique Identity: Biometric matching makes sure no two people get same Aadhaar number.
  • e-Aadhaar: Digital PDF copy of Aadhaar. It is legally valid. Password = first 4 letters of your name (CAPITAL) + birth year Example: Vish1996
  • Masked Aadhaar: Shows only last 4 digits (XXXX XXXX 1234). Useful for safe sharing.
  • Baal Aadhaar: Blue Aadhaar card for children under 5 by myAadhaar. Only photo is taken (no biometrics).
  • Aadhaar PVC Card: Plastic wallet-size Aadhaar card. You can order it online for ₹50.
  • Virtual ID (VID): Temporary 16-digit number you can use instead of Aadhaar for extra privacy.
  • Aadhaar Is NOT Proof of Citizenship: Aadhaar confirms identity and address — not nationality. This is clarified by UIDAI and Supreme Court of India.

Where Aadhaar Is Used

Aadhaar helps in daily life and government services:

  • Financial Services: Bank account opening, Mutual funds & Insurance KYC.
  • Government Benefits (DBT): Direct subsidy delivery like LPG, PM-KISAN, Ayushman Bharat.
